Then come back here to learn the official rules and movement standards you'll need on race day.
What are the official HYROX rules?
The basic HYROX structure remains simple: complete eight 1 km runs and eight workout stations in the prescribed order. To receive a valid finishing time, racers must complete the full 8 km running distance and all eight stations in sequence.
But there is more to the HYROX competition rules than simply completing the workout.
Every racer must:
- Complete all eight runs and workout stations in the correct order.
- Complete the prescribed distance or repetitions for their division.
- Use the correct weight for their division.
- Follow the official movement standards for every station.
- Use the equipment and lane assigned by the Race Crew.
- Enter and exit each workout station through the correct routes.
- Follow instructions from Judges and Race Officials.
- Wear the timing chip correctly on the ankle throughout the race.
Notes: Lane rules can vary by station. At the Sled Push and Sled Pull, racers must stay within their assigned lanes and complete each section as prescribed. However, at the Burpee Broad Jumps, Farmer's Carry, and Sandbag Lunges, lane markings are for orientation only. Faster racers may overtake slower racers when it is safe to do so.
The race structure remains consistent, but specific HYROX regulations vary by division and race category. Singles, Doubles, and Relay have their own rules, while prescribed weights and some participation requirements differ between divisions.

HYROX station rules
Each station has its own movement standards. The most important thing to remember is that finishing the distance or rep count isn't enough if the movement itself doesn't meet the standard.
Station | Key competition standard | Important rule to know |
SkiErg | Complete 1,000 m with your feet on the SkiErg base. | You must receive Judge confirmation before leaving. A foot touching the floor is an infringement. |
Sled Push | Complete 4 × 12.5 m using your assigned sled lane. | The sled and racer must stay within the assigned lane and complete every section. Racers must face the direction of travel for the entire Sled Push distance; turning around or walking backward is now a penalizable violation |
Sled Pull | Complete 4 × 12.5 m using your assigned lane. | The sled must completely pass the 12.5 m mark before changing direction. |
Burpee Broad Jumps | Complete 80 m of burpee broad jumps. | The chest must touch the ground. Both feet must take off and land together, with no additional shuffles between jumps, up to 5cm of foot stagger between toe tips is permitted |
Rowing | Complete 1,000 m. | Stay seated until the full distance is completed and a Judge confirms the station. |
Farmer's Carry | Carry both kettlebells for 200 m. | You may put them down to rest, but they cannot move forward when placed down. They must be returned correctly at the finish. |
Sandbag Lunges | Complete 100 m of alternating lunges. | The trailing knee must touch the ground and each rep must finish with full hip and knee extension. No steps or shuffles between reps. |
Wall Balls | Complete 100 valid reps. | Start standing tall, squat below parallel, and hit the correct target with the ball. |
One important change for Wall Balls
Wall Balls are judged differently from Stations 1 to 7. No warnings are given for Wall Ball movement errors. A repetition is either valid or a no-rep. The physical target and Judge confirmation remain the official standard, even when an event uses a digital rep-counting screen.
HYROX judges don't award points for good technique, but they do enforce movement standards. Learning the correct form before race day can help you avoid no-reps, maintain your pace, and finish with a faster overall time.

Common HYROX penalties and rule violations
Most HYROX penalties aren't caused by a lack of fitness. They're usually the result of missing movement standards or leaving a station before completing the required work.
Judges are stationed throughout the course to ensure every athlete follows the official HYROX regulations. If a movement doesn't meet the required standard, you'll typically receive a no-rep and must repeat the movement before continuing. In some situations, additional penalty work or time penalties may also apply in accordance with the official rulebook.
For Stations 1 to 7, racers generally receive one warning per station for movement-standard infringements. On the second infringement, regardless of type, the repetition becomes invalid and the associated time penalty applies. Further infringements can result in additional penalties.
However, this warning system does not apply to every violation. Some penalties are automatically detected or can be applied immediately depending on the severity of the infringement.
Rule violation | Season 26/27 penalty |
Lingering in the start tunnel after your wave departs | Up to a 1-minute penalty |
Spitting or clearing nose onto the floor/carpet during the race | 2-minute penalty per infringement |
Missing a run lap | 3 to 7 minutes per missed lap, depending on the venue |
Missing an entire run or station | Disqualification |
Completing stations out of order | 3-minute penalty for the first infringement, then DQ for another |
Incorrect use of Roxzone IN/OUT arches | 2 minutes per infringement |
Incorrect station entry or exit | 2 minutes per infringement |
Feet off SkiErg base / incorrect rower footplate position | 15 seconds per infringement |
Leaving SkiErg, Rowing or Wall Balls before completion | Disqualification |
Missing a sled lane | Disqualification |
Burpee Broad Jump infringement | 15 seconds per infringement |
Missing a Farmer's Carry lap | Disqualification |
Incorrectly returning kettlebells | 30 seconds |
Incorrect Farmer's Carry or Lunge weight | Disqualification |
Lunge movement infringement | 15 seconds per infringement |
Removing the sandbag from the required position | 15 seconds per infringement |
Using chalk incorrectly | 2 minutes |
Outside assistance | 2 minutes per infringement |
Starting in the wrong wave without approval | Disqualification |
When can I be disqualified?
Disqualification is reserved for serious rule violations or situations that make the race incomplete or invalid. Examples include:
- Starting in the wrong wave without prior approval.
- Missing an entire 1 km run.
- Failing to complete any workout station.
- Leaving certain stations before completing the required distance or reps.
- Missing a required sled lane or Farmer's Carry lap.
- Using an incorrect weight at the Farmer's Carry or Sandbag Lunges without correcting the issue as required.
- Completing more than one station out of order.
Only the Race Director has the authority to disqualify a racer. Judges and Head Judges can report infringements and apply the relevant penalties within their authority.
HYROX Doubles rules you should know
If you're competing in Doubles, the rules change in a few important ways.
Both athletes must run each 1 km section together. During workout stations, they can divide the work between them, but both athletes must enter the station together and leave together.
The Season 26/27 Doubles rules also introduce a specific penalty for teammates separating during the run. If one athlete runs ahead, a 1-minute penalty applies. If the team receives more than three penalties for not staying together, the team is marked Out of Competition and does not receive a ranking.
This is an important distinction from Singles and is one reason you should always read the rulebook for your specific race category.
How to avoid HYROX penalties
The easiest way to avoid penalties is to train to the standard, not just to the movement.
Before race day:
- Practice every station using the correct movement standards.
- Know your division's exact weights and distances.
- Practice completing stations in the correct order.
- Learn your venue's lane and lap setup when the athlete map is available.
- Practice transitions without rushing into the wrong entry or exit.
- Listen to Judges and correct an issue immediately.
- In Doubles, practice staying together throughout every run.
The goal isn't simply to move faster. It's to make every rep count.
Race day tips for first-time HYROX competitors
Knowing the rules is only part of the equation. A few simple habits can help you race more efficiently and avoid unnecessary mistakes on competition day.
- Read the athlete briefing before your race starts. Event-specific instructions may vary slightly by venue.
- Listen to the judges. If they ask you to correct a movement, do it immediately to avoid wasting time.
- Focus on clean reps instead of rushing. One no-rep often costs more time than performing the movement correctly the first time.
- Know your division's weights. Open and Pro divisions use different prescribed loads for selected stations.
- Practice race standards in training. Simulating official movement standards helps you build confidence before competition.
By arriving prepared and understanding the official HYROX event rules, you can spend less time worrying about penalties and more time performing at your best.
Master the rules. Own the race.
Knowing the HYROX rules gives you an edge before race day. Every clean rep, efficient transition, and penalty avoided can save valuable seconds when the clock is running.
The best way to prepare isn't just reading the rulebook. It's training to the same standards you'll face in competition. Practice official movement standards, refine your technique, and build the confidence to execute every station under fatigue.

FAQ
Can I skip a station in HYROX?
No. Every competitor must complete all eight workout stations and eight 1 km runs in the correct order. You cannot skip a station or move on until you've finished the required work and received approval from the judge.
What happens if I fail a repetition in HYROX?
If a repetition doesn't meet the required movement standard, the judge will call a no-rep. The repetition won't count, and you'll need to perform it again before progressing. Repeated no-reps can add significant time to your overall result.
Can my teammate and I split the workout in HYROX Doubles?
Yes. In the Doubles division, both athletes complete every run together, but they can divide the workload at each workout station however they choose unless otherwise stated in the official rulebook. They can alternate repetitions, switch throughout the station, or have one athlete complete the entire workout.
Are the HYROX rules the same at every event?
The core HYROX rules and movement standards are standardized, but some race-day details can vary by venue. Course layouts, lap setups, and certain event-specific instructions may differ. For example, the penalty for a missed running lap is 3 to 7 minutes per lap, depending on the venue's setup.
